Begijnenborre, Dilbeek

Kindergarten, after-school care and holiday activities, multipurpose halls.

A set of outdated school pavilions on a green site is due for replacement and will be complemented with new playground facilities and multipurpose halls. We set ourselves a few clear constraints: to not cut down any trees, and to keep the existing school building in use throughout the construction phase.

The new school building aligns itself with the double row of linden trees. The trees offer privacy, a sense of shelter, solar shading, framed views, light, and shadow — living with the seasons. The after-school care and kindergarten are together, yet separate. The distance to the shared functions (dining hall, multipurpose hall, and covered playground) is the same for both. The floor plan is highly flexible in both use and management, allowing for a wide range of possible scenarios.
