Social Housing, Helsinkistraat Ghent

The green, (semi)public inner courtyards and pedestrian passages, characteristic of the Muide-Meulestede neighbourhood, are preserved and enhanced with a new passage that connects these the green areas.
The project consists of two parts, connected by an outdoor staircase and a walkway. On the left are stacked maisonettes: seven duplex units on the ground floor with a garden, and above them seven two-bedroom apartments with an internal terrace on the south side. The right part consists of two one-bedroom apartments and a larger duplex apartment under the roof.
The shared entrance, featuring a tree and a bench in the sun at the street side, provides a space for informal encounters. The benches along the gallery at the rear also allow residents to enjoy the garden view and have a chat with neighbors. It is this ‘in-between’ space that defines the cohesion of the whole and enhances community interactions.
